Infographic illustrates 10 years of the iPod (Updated)

The 10th anniversary of the iPod’s announcement isn’t until October 22, but the folks at Most Wanted (part of VoucherCodes.co.uk) came up with a celebratory infographic that was just too good to pass up. It depicts an illustrated history of the iPod since that happy day in 2001, and is reprinted with permission in its entirety here. Enjoy this trip down memory lane!

Update: Obviously there was never a 1st-gen iPod touch with the capacities shown here. The touch started with 8 and 16 GB editions and later added a 32 GB model.

State Farm app can monitor your driving performance

Like your tattletale little sister in the passenger seat, State Farm is there.

The auto/home/life insurance giant has recently started advertising the new Driver Feedback app for iPhone. The free app uses the iPhone’s sensors to measure your acceleration, cornering and braking habits, then calculates a score based on how you’ve done. If you’re famed in the family for your jackrabbit starts, high-speed two-wheel turns and jamming on the brakes, chances are good that your score will be low. Drivers who take the Family Truckster out for a more sedate spin get a higher score.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your score) the company doesn’t offer discounts or raise your rates based on your driving habits. The app also doesn’t send information to State Farm. It’s just a good way to see if you could improve your driving skills and perhaps keep yourself from potentially dangerous situations. iDea: A new Apple product courtesy of TeamCoco

With RIM promising that the BlackBerry PlayBook is going to be an “iPad killer” (yeah, right), what do the geniuses in Cupertino have in the queue to make everyone else play catch-up again?

According to the highly authoritative tech news source TeamCoco, spearheaded by none other than Conan O’Brien, it’s the iDea. Take a look at the first ad for the new product on the next page.

Chef Sleeve for iPad: The iPad 2 meets a raw egg (video)

Longtime readers of TUAW know that I love to cook, and when I’m not whipping something up from scratch I use my iPad to read recipes that I’ve stored on Dropbox. I’ve been extremely lucky using my iPad in the kitchen; about the worst thing I’ve ever done is to smear the screen with greasy fingers and dribble a small amount of wine-infused mushroom pan sauce on it. But I am really worried that one of these days, my luck’s going to run out and that iPad 2 is going to end up with a ladleful of Bison Chili on — and in — it.

Some cyberchefs have taken to putting their iPads into gallon zip top bags to protect them, but I’ve found that the thickness of those bags means that my taps and gestures sometimes don’t translate too well to the iPad’s touch screen. I recently received an interesting package from Santiago Merea, the CEO of Merea Consulting of Minneapolis. He’s the man behind Chef Sleeve, his solution to the problem of using an iPad in the kitchen.

Chef Sleeves are cleverly packaged clear plastic sleeves designed specifically for those situations where you need to use an iPad, but might have fingers covered with a patient’s bodily fluids or a cake batter. Although they’re not designed to be used to immerse an iPad, they are splash-resistant, so using your iPad in the rain might become a possibility. I decided to put one to the test the best way I knew how: by cracking a raw egg right on to my white iPad 2. Video after the break.

Air Display for Mac: Turn another Mac into an extended display

One very popular and fun iPhone / iPad app that I love to use is Avatron Software’s Air Display. As we described in a First Look back in May of 2010, Air Display turns an iOS device into a small wireless monitor that can be used to display app windows from a Mac or Windows computer.

Now Avatron has made Air Display even more useful by creating a Mac app to do the same thing. Air Display for Mac (US$19.99 in the Mac App Store) is a bit more expensive than its iOS sibling, but it’s also more capable than the mobile device version — especially if you have a second Mac with a large screen.

Similar to Air Display for iOS, Air Display turns a Mac into a wireless display for extending the desktop of your other Mac or Windows computer. Air Display is available in the Mac App Store, and needs to be installed on the Mac that you want to turn into a secondary display. You then need to visit the Avatron website to download the host software for your primary computer. As noted, that computer can be either a Mac (running Snow Leopard) or a Windows PC (running XP, Vista or 7). You do have to reboot the host computer during the installation process. The same host software works with both iOS and Mac extended displays.
