Logitech outs Apple-friendly Wireless Solar Keyboard K760, we go hands-on

Earlier this May, Logitech unveiled its Solar Keyboard Folio for the new iPad and iPad 2, and the accessory maker is rounding out the month by adding another sun-powered peripheral to its stable. Like the Keyboard Folio, the just-announced Wireless Solar Keyboard K760 works with iPads, but it’s also compatible with Macs and iPhones. The K760 has Bluetooth for pairing up to three devices at a time, and it features Mac-specific keys such as Brightness, Command and Eject. Users should get about three months of use after the keyboard is fully charged up via sun or indoor light. We got to do a bit of typing with the K760, and are happy to report that it’s a fairly well-built little grid. The deck feels solid, and the keys have a decent depth to them when pressed. Plus, the spun metal power button and the silver flake paint job lend a premium appearance. It’ll cost $80 when it goes on sale next month, and you can get a closer look at what those dollars will buy in our gallery below. Head past the break for the full PR.

Perceptive Pixel shows world’s largest projected capacitive display at SIGGRAPH, we go hands-on (video)

Perceptive Pixel wasn’t kidding around when it launched the planet’s biggest projected capacitive display here at SIGGRAPH — all 82 inches of it were here on display, and naturally, we stopped by to give it a look. While 82-inch panels aren’t anything new, this one’s particularly special. You see, the company actually procures the panels from Samsung, and then it rips the guts out while bonding its own network of sensors directly to it; most large-screen touch devices simply pop a touch layer on top of whatever TV shows up in the labs, but this integrated approach takes sensitivity to a whole ‘nother level. For those unfamiliar with the term ‘projected capacitive,’ we’re surmising that it’s actually far less foreign than you think — it’s a technology used in a handful of smartphones, from Samsung’s Moment to Apple’s iPhone. 3M was also showing off a PC tech preview back at CES, and after using it here on the show floor, there’s no question that it’s the future for larger-screen devices. To quote CEO Jeff Han: “once consumers get a taste of this on the mobile front, they start demanding it elsewhere.”

Skype for iPad is finally out (hands-on!)


A native Skype app for the iPad has finally appeared, opening up your Apple slate for voice and video chatting with others on Macs, PCs or even TVs. It’s not listed as an update to the existing iOS app, but as a separate Skype for iPad download that’s only shown up in certain countries so far — at first we couldn’t find it on the US iTunes but it finally appeared after some searching. Just like Skype for iPhone, everything works over both WiFi and 3G, but one key difference is the ability to instant message during video calls. Update: So, we’ve just taken the app for a quick spin via a 3G to WiFi call and it’s laid out very nicely — maintaining the familiarity of its desktop client. Getting a video chat started was quick with acceptably clean audio and mostly consistent video streaming (aside from an occasional freeze-frame). Whether you’re in landscape or portrait mode there’s access to recent conversations, and you can even start conversations within your current chat; we’d say that the former works out better for getting around, although it does make it hard to stay in frame. Overall it feels like a souped-up version of the iPhone release, and impressions aside, the gallery down below should give you a better look at what to expect.

Update 2: Just as suddenly as it appeared, it has now been yanked from iTunes stores everywhere. A Tweet from the official account says it went live “prematurely” — your guess is as good as ours as to when it will return.

Update 3: Aaaaand… she’s back! Or, at least it sure looks like it. Hopefully for good this time!

PhotoFast i-FlashDrive does USB on one end, 30-pin dock connector on the other

Apple’s iOS devices may lack native memory expansion, but PhotoFast has now come up with solution that just about bests the official camera connection kit. What you’re looking at here is the i-FlashDrive, a memory dongle that sports both a USB plug and an Apple 30-pin dock connector, and it comes in three flavors starting from 8GB at $95 up to 32GB at $180. What’s more, the drive also works with a free Cupertino-approved app that provides both external and internal file management (for music, photos, movies, and more), contact backup, and native MP3 playback.
